Just 13% See Trade As Only an Economic Issue; 75% Want National Security and Human Rights Issues Considered As Well

In terms of trade with other nations, 13% of voters believe the United States should consider only economic issues. A Scott Rasmussen national survey found that 75% believe national security and human rights issues should also be considered.

A solid majority of every measured demographic group favors consideration of more than economic factors.

If the United States sharply reduced trade with China, 27% believe it would hurt the U.S. more than China while 24% have the opposite view. A plurality (36%) believes both would be equally hurt.

However, 77% of voters consider it at least somewhat likely that reducing trade with China would lead to higher prices and other economic challenges.

52% Want Stricter Trade and Travel Regulations on Communist Nations and Dictatorships

Fifty-two percent (52%) of voters believe the United States should impose stricter trade and travel regulations on communist nations and dictatorships. A Scott Rasmussen national survey disagree and believe the trade and travel rules be the same for all nations. Nineteen percent (19%) are not sure.

White voters and suburban voters are more likely to favor stricter regulations on communist nations and dictatorships. Older voters are more likely than younger voters to support stricter regulations.

The survey also found that 42% of voters see China as our nation’s greatest national security threat. Nineteen percent (19%) see Russia as the biggest threat while 15% name North Korea.

Most Republicans and a solid plurality of Independent voters see China as the biggest threat. Democrats are evenly divided between China and Russia.

65% Favor Prohibiting U.S. Gov’t From Entering Into Contracts With Any Entity Relying Upon Forced Labor In China

Sixty five percent (65%) of voters favor prohibiting the U.S. government from entering into contracts with any entity the relies upon the use of forced labor in China. A Scott Rasmussen national survey found 15% oppose such a ban and 19% are not sure.

The totals include 36% who Strongly Favor such a proposal and 4% who are Strongly Opposed.

Sixty-two percent (62%) believe it should be against the law for companies in the U.S. to purchase or sell any products made by forced labor in Chinese detention camps.

Data released earlier showed that 66% of voters believe it is important for the United States to hold China accountable for its abuse of the Uyghur Muslims. A broader question found that 80% of voters think it is important for the United States to hold China accountable for its use of slave labor and other human rights violations.

Fifty-eight percent (58%) believe the U.S. system of politics and government is morally superior to China’s. Just 16% disagree.

66% Believe It Is Important for the United States to Hold China Accountable for its abuse of the Uyghur Muslims

Sixty-six percent (66%) of voters believe it is important for the United States to hold China accountable for its abuse of the Uyghur Muslims. A Scott Rasmussen national survey found that 11% disagree and say it’s not important. Twenty-two percent (22%) are not sure.

Those totals include 37% who think it’s Very Important to hold China accountable and 4% who say it’s Not at All Important.

The desire to hold China accountable may be reduced somewhat by the fact that relatively few U.S. voters are aware of how China has abused the Uyghur Muslims.

Data released earlier showed that 80% of voters think it is important for the United States to hold China accountable for its use of slave labor and other human rights violations. Additionally, 60% believe it is important to hold China accountable for the spread of COVID-19.

Fifty-eight percent (58%) believe the U.S. system of politics and government is morally superior to China’s. Just 16% disagree.

63% Have Experienced Backorders, Delays, Shortages

Sixty-three percent (63%) of voters have experienced backorders, delays or shortages of items they would like to buy. A Scott Rasmussen national survey found that 31% have not and 6% are not sure.

Among those who have experience supply chain problems, the most common experiences revolve around new clothes, computers and tech gadgets, and home appliances.

Sixty-nine percent (69%) of rural voters have experienced supply chain issues along with 62% of suburban voters and 58% of urban voters.

Seventy-five percent (75%) of Republicans have dealt with backorders, delays, and shortages. So have 61% of Independent voters and 53% of Democrats.

26% Consider Trade Policies As a National Security Issue

Twenty-six percent (26%) of voters nationwide consider trade policies to be primarily a national security issue. A Scott Rasmussen national survey found that 56% disagree and consider them primarily an economic issue. Eighteen percent (18%) are not sure.

However, other data from the survey confirms that voters see more to trade policy than raw economics.

Most voters (58%) say ensuring that important materials are produced in the United States is a higher priority than keeping costs down. Just 28% say keeping costs down and promoting economic growth matters more.

The view that ensuring U.S. based production matters more than keeping costs down is shared by 67% of Republicans, 60% of Independent voters, and 49% of Democrats.

Fifty-six percent (56%) say they are willing to pay significantly higher costs on many goods to ensure that U.S. production capability. Twenty-five percent (25%) disagree.

Data released earlier shows that, following the pandemic, 70% of voters want to either reduce or eliminated trade with China.

51% Want Stricter Security on Future Trade and Travel With China

Fifty-one percent (51%) of Registered Voters believe the United States should require stricter security on future trade and travel with China. A Scott Rasmussen national survey found that 27% disagree and 22% are not sure.

By a 71% to 12% margin, Republicans think stricter security is needed. Among Independent voters, 48% want stricter security while 28% disagree. Democrats are evenly divided–37% say yes to stricter security and 40% say no.

Overall, 42% of Registered Voters believe that we need stricter security on future trade and travel with ALL nations. Thirty-four percent (34%) disagree and 25% are not sure.

Data released earlier showed that 47% believe China is primarily responsible for the coronavirus pandemic.

Most were contacted online while 247 were contacted using automated phone polling techniques.
