Senator Smith was appointed by Governor Mark Dayton to replace former Senator Al Franken. At first, this seemed like a great opportunity for Republicans to pick up a seat, but their strongest candidate, Tim Pawlenty, passed on the race. He appears more interested in becoming Governor again. State Senator Karin Housely is running for this seat as is dental technician Bob Anderson. Neither is the top-tier candidate the GOP hoped to recruit. It will be interesting to see who else jumps in the race prior to the June 5 filing deadline.
