If a law was passed requiring gun owners to sell their assault weapons to the government, former Congressman Beto O’Rourke has argued that gun owners “would gladly sell [their weapon] back or destroy it, all of them seem like they would follow the law.”
However, voters are extremely skeptical. If such a law was passed, just 24% think it is even somewhat likely that most owners of those weapons would actually turn their weapons over to the government. Only 9% consider that outcome Very Likely.
If a law was passed requiring all guns be turned over to the government, just 29% of gun owners would be even somewhat likely to comply. That figure may be somewhat inflated due to reluctance of some gun owners to declare that they would violate the law.
