Fifty-eight percent (58%) of American adults are “absolutely certain” that God exists. At the other extreme a ScottRasmussen.com national survey found that 8% are absolutely certain that God does not exist. In between are another 18% who say God “probably” exists, 8% who say probably not. Nine percent (9%) who are not sure.
Among voters under 35, just 49% are “absolutely certain” that God exists. Sixty-one percent (61%) of older voters are that confident. However, this appears to be more uncertainty than disagreement. Younger voters are more likely than their elders to say there is “probably” a God. And, these voters are no more likely than anyone else to say they are certain there is no God (see crosstab results).
Seventy-six percent (76%) of black adults are absolutely certain there is a God. That view is shared by 58% of whites and 55% of Hispanics.
From a political perspective, 71% of Republicans are absolutely certain that God exists.
So are 53% of Democrats. However, there is a huge racial divide among Democrats on this topic. Eighty-two percent (82%) of black Democrats are absolutely certain that God exists. Just 44% of white Democrats share that view.
Among Independents, 50% are certain there is a God. It is important to note, however, that a person’s faith is far more likely to be part of their self-identification than their political affiliations.
Other data released this morning shows that 43% pray on a daily basis. Another 12% pray several times a week. At the other extreme, 30% rarely or never pray. One out of four Americans (26%) regularly meet with a small group of others who share their faith for study, fellowship, or accountability.
