25% Will Be Asleep When The New Year Arrives

Twenty-five percent (25%) of American adults will be asleep at midnight when the New Year arrives. Just 13% will be at a party, restaurant, bar, or show. A ScottRasmussen.com national survey found that most Americans–52%–will be awake at home when the New Year arrives.

Those totals include 30% who will be at home with family or roommates, 12% with friends or extended family visiting, and 10% who will be home alone.

The survey also found that people are more likely to pray than drink on December 31.

Sixty percent (60%) will pray on that day while 47% will drink alcohol. Partly that reflects the reality that 43% of adults pray daily.  Some, of course, will both pray and drink.

When all is said and done, 16% say they are Very Likely to start the New Year with a hangover. Another 17% believe it is Somewhat Likely. Fully one-third (33%) of adults under age 35 say it’s Very Likely they’ll start the New Year with a hangover (see crosstab results). 

Nineteen percent (19%) have already made a New Year’s resolution and another 31% expect to do so. Among those making resolutions, just 44% believe they are Very Likely to stick with them for more than a month.

Overall, 21% consider the New Year’s celebration to be one of our nation’s most important holidays while 30% consider it one of the least important.

The national survey of 1,077 Adults was conducted December 26-27, 2018 by ScottRasmussen.com and HarrisX, a polling company specializing in online surveys (see Methodology). It has a 3.0 percentage point Margin of Error with a 95% level of confidence.
